During the months of May and June i worked dilligently to get interviews done for the new blog. I want to appologize to those i interveiwed for wasting their time, and to the readers who expected to read them.
Life has taken...an unexpected turn, and i simply can't bring myself to continue this blog or any other.
that is all i have to say. It's just not going to happen.

V:Tell me about yourself
M:My name is Morgan, but you can call me Eliza (everyone else does ;). I spent my first 17 years in a small town inWestern New York. From there, I went on to attain a BFA degree in Fashion Design & Product Development fromStephens College in Columbia, MO before ending up in Little Rock, AR working as an assistant designer for a southern based retailer. Currently I live in Hot Springs, AR with my boyfriend and our puppy, Axel.

V:Where does the name of your store come from?
M:I agonized over picking a name for my store and decided, in the end that short and sweet was best. Eliza is my nickname and Axel is a family name I have always loved. It's also the name of my highly uncoordinated German Shepherd puppy. Combining the two was the perfect solution to the name game. :)

V:What or who inspires you the most?
M:History, culture and the way people interact with and are inspired by them. With regards to fashion, I’m a huge Sandra Backlund fan, she is incredibly talented. I was lucky enough to see the presentation of her 'In No Time' collection last Fall and I've been hooked ever since. I also love Phillip Lim, Alexander McQueen and Consuelo Castiglioni of Marni.

V:What kind of woman do you picture wearing the items you create?
M:I picture a woman, age 30 to 45, educated, fashionable, creative, and youthful wearing the items I create. She values family and friends and loves shopping for unique and eclectic products designed with an eye for craftsmanship and detail.

V:What is your personal fashion philosophy?
M:I believe above all that fashion exists to enhance a person's natural beauty and personality; it should never overshadow it.

V:Is running Eliza + Axel a full time job for you?
M:Yes, it is my full time job. Before this, I had a 'day' job as an assistant designer for a large, southern based retailer but quickly discovered corporate life wasn't something I wanted to pursue. So I started researching other options and found etsy. I started Eliza + Axel about a year later and just as my sales were picking up I was laid-off. As unexpected as the layoff was, it really was a blessing in disguise. It allowed me to further concentrate on my business and because of that I am fully able to support myself through my craft today.

V:When did you first start sewing, and designing?
M:My mother was always making clothes for my sisters and I, but I didn’t become interested in fashion or sewing until I started high school and began designing and beading my own figure skating dresses. I had figure skated throughout elementary school and began to compete when I entered high school, but dresses were expensive so I learned to do all the beading myself which lessened the cost. From there I went on to design dance dresses for a local ballet company and eventually ended up with a degree in fashion design.

V:Do you have any formal training? (i.e. was your major in college fashion merchandising or design related) or did this start out as a hobby?
M:I studied and graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design & Product Development from Stephens College in Columbia, MO and completed several internships in NYC; one with designer Elie Tahari and another with The New York City Ballet.

V:How did the idea of embellishing t-shirts come to you?
M:Working in the fashion industry you start realizing just how much useable fabric ends up in landfills. At my previous job we tossed several thousand pounds of textiles out each year. I wanted to develop a way to turn that waste into lovely and useable objects to wear and so, Eliza + Axel was born. Currently I use reclaimed fabrics as the trims (textured flowers, appliqued circles, etc…) on my tees, but eventually I would like my garments to be made completely of reclaimed fabrics.

V:Why did you decide to sell on Etsy rather than eBAY or another similar site?
M:I decided to sell on Etsy because of the built-in community it offered. The sellers and administrators on Etsy are incredibly helpful. They will answer absolutely any question you have and if they cannot, will send you to someone who can. Etsy is like an extended family and I knew that was the kind of environment I wanted for my shop.

V:Are there any downfalls to selling on Etsy?
M:None that I’ve found; it’s a wonderful site and I don’t have any complaints. Its incredible just how easy it is to manage my shop and the community is wonderfully genuine and friendly.

V:What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start their own online store? What is the first step they should take?
M:First step is to develop your brand from top to bottom and find an appropriate niche. Be good to your customers. Really good. Assuming that your product is fantastic, treating your customers extra well, with respect, appreciation, honesty, and generosity, will make them happy to come back to your shop.

V:On average, how long does it take to complete a garment?
M:1-2 hours on average. 1 hour to create the embellishments and another to sew them to the tee.

V:What kind of materials do you use?
M:Currently I’m using reclaimed cotton jersey and interlock for my embellishments, but I’m working on developing a line of higher priced luxury tees with reclaimed cashmere, fur, silk and leather embellishments.

V:When you are coming up with new ideas what is the inventive process? How do you apply your ideas to make the final product?
M:I’d say my process is truly “organic” in nature… it often evolves out of seeing a single button, fabric or trim which triggers an idea for a new style. I never spend a lot of time stressing about what sort of “theme” one of my collections is going to have. The ideas are always there and ready to flow when I start sketching.

V:Do you get a lot of custom orders? What are the most common requests?
M:I love getting custom orders! Its so rewarding working with a customer to create something unique to their individual sense of style. Mostly custom orders are for smaller or larger sizes, but I also fill custom orders for unique colors that I don't usually carry in my store.

V:How do you promote your store?
M:I’ve been lucky enough to be featured in several online magazines, review sites, and many, many blogs. I don't really advertise, they just happen to find me, but its great for promotion. In addition, the way etsy is set up has allowed customers from all over the world to find my store.

V:Have you considered branching out; embellishing pants, hats, gloves, shoes etc?
M: I’m currently working on embellishing shoes and handbags. We have a fabulous store in Hot Springs that sells ‘flawed’ goods retailers & manufacturers would otherwise throw away. I have piles of these 'flawed' shoes in my studio just waiting to be embellished. I love making these kinds of undesirable objects desirable again!

V:What do you hope is in store for your future and the future of Eliza + Axel?
M:Still sewing and loving it, hopefully in a place of my own. I would love to expand Eliza + Axel to include clothing, accessories and home objects, but it will always be a small / local company.

Kelsi is currently the proctor of an online Vintage shop, handmade accessories boutique, used book library, and purchasable art display. At the rate she’s going she could open up her own mini-mall! The remarkable Mrs. Smith puts a modern twist on timeless favorites like 'fascinators' and pearl necklaces at her handmade Etsy store, Stylesmith which captured my heart immediately. I’m pleased she found time in her hectic life to share a bit about it and her interest in fashion.

V:What is your name & age?
K:My name is Kelsi Smith (sometimes Kelsi Luberda Smith depending on how much of a Mrs I feel like being) and I am 25 years old this month.

V:How did you get your start as an artist?
K:To be honest I have hard time defining myself as an artist. But if you consider me an artist that's great! And then my answer to your question is, since birth.

V:Is running the Stylesmith shops a full time job?
K:Yes and no. It wasn't ever supposed to be but it is going that way...

V:If not, what is your ‘day’ job?
K:I'm an actress. Tee hee hee. No seriously I am.

V:What inspires you most?
K:Wow. Life. Little snippets of other people’s existence. Whether viewed in a magazine, a book, a blog a movie. I think my brain is like a collage of everything I have ever seen and it would be impossible to pinpoint just one thing.

V:What is your personal fashion philosophy?
K:Wear what you love. If you feel strongly about something then do it.

V:What is your design process like?
K:It really involves just playing. Matching colours and textures, Most of the time I just dream something up and then attempt to put it into practice. I'm not a particularly patient person so it's hard for me to have a long drawn out design process.

V:Name some of the collections you’ve created.
K:Well it all started with The Bird on a Wire collection. Then came 'Holiday Romance' (which was never fully formed and really still a work in process) and much of that collection became 'The Cocktail Collection' and the most recent has been 'Royal Anarchy' V:Which collection is your favorite? K:My first. I still love Bird on a Wire. It's one that I don't think I'll ever retire

V:What aesthetic are you going for with the individual Stylesmith collections?
K:Playful and whimsical but elegant at the same time.

V:What kind of woman do you picture wearing the items you create?
K:Any. That was really the point of starting the collections. I wanted to go back to a time when everyone wore hats on any and every occasion. I really want my hats and accessories to attainable and wearable whilst remaining unique and fun!

V:What kind of materials do you use?
K: I use a TON of glue! MagnaTAC millinery glue, it's the best. But my favourite material is the gorgeous wool felt. I love picking out the colours and the texture of it is divine. Occasionally I use vintage veiling, which is always a fun scrounge, and I also like to use vintage materials such as buttons and trims.

V:What does your studio or workspace look like?
K:It's a beautiful l-shaped vintage couch in pale mint. BUT we've just moved and are currently turning the spare room into my studio. At the moment it is full of boxes!

V:Who models your pieces for the shop?
K:Friends and proffessional models, and the odd styrofoam head.

V:Who takes the pictures and arranges the photo shoots?
K:That is all me. I studied photography for a brief period, and throughly enjoy it.

V:What are your top selling items on Stylesmith?
K:The Swallow in Flight is a top seller in Pea Green and Mustard.

V:How do you determine the price for any given piece?
K:It seemed like a fair price, to cover my materials and make some pocket money. I don't use a formula. I tried to work it out with the 'Craft Inc' book once, and apparently I undercharge. But the price seems to work for me and my customers at the moment.

V:Do you sell anywhere outside of Etsy?
K:Yes at shows and venues. I also sell on Dawanda, but I prefer Etsy by far.

V:You also sell vintage. What is your favorite vintage find of all time?
K:My Etienne Aigner riding boots. Unfortuantely they passed away. I haven't had the heart to bury them yet. It makes me so sad as they were perfect and I can't find anything close to their perfectness.

V:Which do you prefer: shopping for vintage clothes for Stylesmith Vintage or creating accessories for Stylesmith?
K:Both equally. I think. It depends if I'm having a busy day and I'm remaking the same hat over and over again, then I'd probably rather be shopping...but if I'm creating something new than that is just as exciting if not more so.

V:When you’re shopping for Stylesmith Vintage what in particular do you look for?
K:Colour and print. I'm a magpie like that. And ANYTHING floral.

V:Do you have any tips or tricks on how to score a quality vintage item amidst a thrift store full of junk?
K:It really is a minefield out there. It takes time. You have to take the time to scour the racks. I tend to buy things I like as opposed to things I think are worth a lot. But I have had some very happy accidents.

V:What were your inntentions when you started selling things? And which store came first?
K:I had very few intentions! I had gotten into making hats as a hobby. And it just got the point where I couldn't make myself anymore hats. There was also a writers strike on and very little work for actors. So it was really very much a good timing thing. The vintage store did come first, but only by a tiny bit. it was easier to set up as I had already been selling on Ebay

V:You’ve also collaborated with web fashion aficionados on the blog Dedicated Followers of Fashion. What is the purpose of the blog?
K:Well, it was something we all really wanted to do. We have a lot to say and it seemed like a good idea to put something together where we could get it all out. It also is a fantastic venue for all our creative passions. And if people read it. All the better!

V:What are you working on now?
K:Right now I'm working on my birthday celebrations and sorting out my new house. But shortly after that I'll be concentrating on the next Dedicated Follower of Fashion photoshoot featuring a good few Etsy gems and some new floral items from yours truly!

V:Who else contributes to Dedicated Follower of fashion? (please include names of their stores)
K:Amy Snider is the only one with a store. She's Every Little Counts and design awesome t-shirts. We have similar clientelle. (http://www.everylittlecounts.net/) and then there is Sharon Gilligan who is a stylist in Los Angeles and Kate McCarthy who is a hair and makeup artist also in Los Angeles (and also does the hair and make-up on most of my shoots). In the future we may have guest bloggers but this is it for now.

V:What do you hope is instore for your future and the future of StyleSmith?
K:Well. My own website will be a good start, where I can have everything in one place. And later in the year I'm going to look further into wholesale and consignment for various stores across the country

I stumbled into this unique perfume store (more like a Museum considering the outrageous selling prices), today and went Straight to Heaven.... (by Killian). All the smells associated with a night of hard partying, minus the sweat and vomit, filled my nostrils. I didn't know whether to dab it on my wrists or cut it with a diet coke and drink it out of a paper bag. It was insanely unusual.

I'm a cashier in one of those classy fragrance kiosks at the local mall...So I've kind of become addicted to finding interesting Eau de Parfums. Which is why I felt compelled to rant about this.

Top notes: Martinican rum absolute, dried fruits accord, nutmeg oil, hedione, cedarwood, patchouli oil, ambergris, vanilla absolute, white musk

And fuck is it expensive!

I think it would be cheaper to just go to a bar and drink yourself into a boozy stupor if you want to smell like Lindsay Lohan ( I was going to say Courtney Love but I love her too much to make fun of her)

When I stumbled upon the delectable Tea Drinking English Rose on blogger.com a few months ago I immediately fell in love with the cutesy musings of its whimsical creator, Charlotte. Not only is TTDER a remarkable little read but it is a genuinely refreshing style diary of a multi-talented individual. The self-proclaimed English Rose is currently in her final year at uni studying Fashion design. In pursuing her dreams of being a designer she discovered what was really important to her and is now committed to a new dream, which she is equally as skilled at. Reevaluating her passions caused her to redirect her life path but her blog is still one of the most inspiring and well styled I've seen. Thankfully, she agreed to grant me an interview and give Valentine readers a new perspective on being a student of fashion. And she does so in a way that is oh so distinctively Charlotte. Read the interview, and visit her blogs, to be whisked away into her fairytale princess land of candy floss, cocktail rings, and chamomile.

V:You were on a very long hiatus from your blog The Tea Drinking English Rose, but now you're back! What keeps you blogging?
C:I love to just get away from the real world of work and normality, and on blogger i feel i can be my real self. the little girl inside me. i can escape and talk of magic and sweetness and nonsense, and others share my creative thoughts which make me smile.

V:What inspired you to start blogging?

C:Well last year, i was doing a project and i googled something like the 'preppy style'. Links had appeared for me to search, and there it was a blog, of whom i cannot remember, and i clicked and clicked and read and read. i just kept coming back and reading more blogs. I thought... 'I want to start one'.

V:There are some overused “fashion blogger poses”, you know, hand-on-hip, hunched over, staring at your shoes, and making arches with your back. However, when you grace the posts with your presence, you appear more like a fidgeting (but endearing) child than a stark,straight faced model. Was there any thought process to that, like "this will be my trademark" or did you just sort of get in front of the camera and wing it?
C: I do get embarrassed in front of the camera sometimes, so maybe that is where it initiates from...oh i didn't even realise i did that! I think i just do whatever feels right or looks right. If that makes sense?

V:What is your fashion philosophy?
C:Well, i do not follow any specific rules. I love to wear jewellery all the time and layer them all up.I love to wear lots of big rings at once too, I feel like i am dressing up. 'all dressed up and nowhere to go'.Nail varnish too. i feel naked with out a pop of colouring to my nails. Even if it is pale pale pink.I wear leggings a lot. and dress tops with lace and lots of teeny buttons and bows. It makes me feel really girly if i wear a pretty top or dress.

V:What or who influences your style the most?

C:Hmm... well i like to dress-up for no reason, and i wish i were still a young child. so perhaps that reflects on what i wear and is influenced that way.

V:How do the people around you, at work, school or home, react to your clothing choices?

C: Studying a fashion design course, it doesn't really take effect with the friends at uni as they all seem to dress a little quirky and 'out-there' so i am sure i am nothing special compared. my friend's from home would say something like 'aw you loo cute today' and i am sure my parents are pleased that i am not wearing things that show all sorts. oh, and i do seem to get asked my age when meeting some friend's at a grown-up bar, all the time.

V:What school you attend?

C:I am currently studying at Nottingham Trent University in England.

V:Think back to high school when you were applying to schools. Why did you choose the particular uni you attend now?
C:Well i visited a few other uni's but the courses seemed so different and i did not come home feeling inspired and excited. Then i visited Nottingham Trent and i felt so goosebumpy and so excited about everything the student told us about. I also wanted to move away quite far from home, which i now highly highly regret. I was not happy at home at the time. My beautiful mama and father didn't want to be friends in love anymore and i just hated it.

V:What advice or information would you give to others who are thinking of perusing their love of design through higher education?
C:If you have such a thriving passion for fashion design, you must go for it! it is so much fun. And you get to learn how to make your own clothes and learn all sorts of interesting techniques. I would make the most of it. Also, to those who are unsure about it, i think you must definitely think about what it is you wish to do. As i sadly do not wish to study fashion further and think the course put me off. But that was clearly due to not enough passion for the subject.i do not regret it though. I have learnt so much and i have had so much fun.

V:Is being a student of fashion different than you expected it to be?
C:No not really. i guess i was so excited at the time that i did not really take into account what was expected overall. but it is everything i assumed it would be. i suppose i did think it would be more on the design front though, but it is mainly focused on sewing.

V:When did you really realize you didn’t want to continue on the path to being a fashion designer?
C:I think it was in my first year when we were piled on with information in our career's lectures. I realised that i wanted to design, not sew. And i completely did not want to start from the bottom and work my way up to that. I was just not passionate enough about designing to spend years being unhappy with the jobs in between.

V:Which course in particular turned you off of fashion design?
C:The career's part in first year. And also we had a writing part of it which i detested. It was called Design And Visual Culture and we had to analyze all these pictures and topics and it was rather boring. And we had to do dissertations and presentations, which too i hate so much. i am too shy to present to my class or anyone.

V:What was your favorite course in school?
C:I adored art so much at school. it was absolute favourite. I quite like textiles. but art was my favourite. i had the most amazing teachers who were so lovely and loved our little art group.

V: Was there any particular project assigned that stood out as your favorite?

C: I am quite enjoying this year's project. I get to do two competition briefs which i have done half of. And now i have started my final project which is all to do with Marie Antoinette and cakes and tea and childrenswear, but for grown ups, and i am making books to go alongside my finished garments. It is fun as i am doing everything i love.

V: You say you have no regrets about majoring in fashion design but what advice would you give to those who are currently in same situation as you but think they've wasted their time?

C: Well if they were half way there, i would say do not throw it all away, stick at it, you might find something along the way that you think..'hmm, i'd quite like to do that'. Like buying or fashion forecasting or styling or even fashion illustration or so. Plus you learn how to sew properly and make your own clothes, so i suppose you are made for life!

V: Do you still believe your fashion design background will be somewhat involved in your future?

C: I will always be interested in art and illustration and i think that it could be involved in a lot of different things. Whether it be applying for a fashion illustration job or for the teeny illustrations in my books i plan to publish. Or even for birthday presents or so. Making clothes for friends and family. If i never took fashion design, i would never have learned how to make clothes.

V:Tell me about designing children’s wear. What is your inspiration? What is the design process like for you?

C:I have only designed for childrenswear once for a competition but it was so much fun. my inspiration for that was my teeny cousin. princess poppy and her love for biscuits. The collection was based on being a girly girl and girly treats like biscuits and teeny cupcakes. In the pockets and the lining of coats it had the recipe to them. the design process is always easy for me. It is my favourite part. I adore to draw. And the research, i love that too.

V:What was your career goal, or dream job, when you were a child?

C: Giggles. I always wanted to be an ice-cream lady...working in my very own ice-cream van.Then it was a sweetshop lady-working in an old traditional sweet shop. And just because i thought i would be allowed to have as many sweets as i wanted.Then when i grew up a little and wanted to be a fashion designer.

V:What is the biggest difference between designing for a child and designing for someone your own age?

C:Not a lot really. My projects have always been based on childrenswear. My projects have the theme of 'childrenswear for grown-ups'.

V:In July '08 you posted a small collection of clothes you made for yourself inspired by little girls raiding their mother’s closets. Did you ever expand that collection? And would you ever consider making adult size clothes to sell to others online?

C:That collection was for my final second year project. I made the garments to fit myself so that was useful. I do not think my sewing skills are good enough to sell. But perhaps one day I could sell a line of summer dresses or so. I would like that.

V:You have another blog, Have You Seen My shoes. What is it all about?

C:It is a blog that i have with my friend from home and it is one of those random things that doesn't really mean much. But something that we can do together. Our first few posts were completely odd. But now we have been posting about our random adventures. So just something lighthearted and silly.

V:You also make the most adorable birthday cards for your close friends and family. Ever consider selling them online?

C:I used to make them to sell when i was younger, but lost time for it. I would love to. But i think i do not have such knowledge for those Internet stores. like Etsy. It all confuses my teeny brain.

V:So you are a designer, a blogger, a student, and a card maker. But what is your real passion?

C:My real passion is drawing and writing. I have completely fallen in love with the idea of writing stories and drawing teeny pictures with it. I wish to become a children's story writer and illustrator when i graduate uni this summer.

V:Any quotes you live by?

C: Never let fear stop you from dancing on the moon' -Dancing on the Moon film and

'Never let anyone make you feel inferior without your consent' - Eleanor Roosevelt.

V:What do you hope is in store for your future?

C:My future, i hope consists of:making and selling many copies of my very own children's storybooks.travelling to India one day.owning my very own teeny boutique filled with handcrafted gifts and handmade cards and paintings and a selection of clothes, with a tearoom attached with homemade cakes.getting married in a church to a prince and have three children and live happily ever after. (Not necessarily a prince though.)

V:And of course, what did you do for Valentine’s Day this year?

C:I posted homemade valentine's cards to all my family and all my closest friends. This year valentine's day is all about girly time. My friend and i went to a place filled with lots of antiques and old pictures and all sorts for sale. Then we went to a magical bookshop and i bought some children's stories and some poems. Then we stopped off to a lovely retro-style tearoom to have two whole teapots of tea and two cupcakes to share and we played 'guess who?' for an hour. Then we came home to spend the rest of the day with our housemates. We are going to watch films in the evening and eat Chinese takeaway. Oh and sweets

UPDATE! I'm excited to say there will be an interview next week! Yes, i was hoping to have it up by Saturday. It's my fault actually, not the fault of my dear interviewee, who contacted me earlier today. I got a letter from a college I applied to and they want me there at 9am on V-day for a tour and a little meet and greet. I'm not going to tell you what college in case you plan on asking. And then I have a break from school which I'm using to work on a documentary I'm making in NYC for my Historical Film class. Sounds more thrilling than it is.

Well i was hoping to have the very first interveiw up by Saturday (V-day, yes, it's a little cliche) however, I'm having trouble contacting the person i want to interveiw! Everything is written up but she hasn't gotten back to me yet. So i'm organizing a back-up interveiw and hoping for a speedy reply. Check back for updates.
